The primary purposes of these regulations are to promote the public health, safety, and general welfare through implementing the Granite County Growth Policy, and to protect the character, qualities, and natural environment of the Georgetown Lake area while at the same time allowing for responsible planned growth. Water Levels Update from Dave Amman, Hydrologist

On June 30, the Georgetown Lake water surface elevation was 6429.43 feet, and the July 11 elevation was 6429.52 feet. The high inflows and outflows of June have subsided and outflow is currently set at 41 cfs. With this reduced outflow rate, the lake level is still rising. According to the most recent figures, inputs now are between 65 and 70 cfs. It is possible that the lake will rise again to the spillway crest by the end of July.... Georgetown Lake Homeowner’s Association

Busy? You bet! The Homeowner’s Association is up to their elbows with efforts to keep Georgetown Lake a place all of us continue to enjoy year after year.
Since 2000, the Georgetown Lake Homeowner’s Association has been an advocate on the Flint Creek Dam Advisory Board. Other community representatives on this board include: DNRC, U.S. Forest Service, Fish Wildlife and Parks and irrigators from the upper and lower valley. This group monitors discharges from the lake and advises commissioners on lake levels and seasonal flows. DNRC uses this information to advise Granite County commissioners on lake management.
Homeowner’s board members also sit on the Granite County Planning Board and the Flint Creek Watershed Steering Committee to monitor growth and development in our area.
During 2006, Denton’s Point Lodge and land sold and later subdivided. Homeowners and area citizens were very concerned about the proposed density for the subdivision and its impact on water quality. Our board hired the Helena engineering firm of Anderson & Montgomery to review the proposed septic and storm water systems. The results of this study caused DEQ to mandate a system with 4 monitoring wells and relocation of drain fields among other items. Homeowner’s efforts caused improvements and upgrades to the proposed systems.
In December 2007, homeowners and citizens at the lake initiated discussions with Granite County and asked for development guidelines. After 5 months of debate with the commissioners, we hired Applied Communications consultant Robert Horne of Whitefish. He assisted us with public scoping meetings, written responses and web surveys to determine important lake issues. We then provided survey results to Granite County Planning Department and Commissioners and requested a development district for one year. This interim period will allow us to work on plausible solutions for growth. Late January 2009, we expect the Commissioners response to our request.
In 2007 and 2008, the Georgetown Lake Homeowner’s Association was more than an interested party to the “change of use” request by Granite County concerning dam operations and power generation. We retained the law firm Garlington, Lohn, Robinson in Missoula and their water attorney Stephen Brown to represent homeowner’s association interest in this matter. During day long hearings, depositions were taken; homeowners testified and were represented before a DNRC hearing examiner. “Change of use” was ultimately denied and the status of water storage right remains unchanged.
Over the past two years the board also initiated a “state of the lake” study, obtained grants, attended informational meetings, interviewed citizens and created strategies to continue our goal of ensuring water quality, property values and way of life at the lake.
We recently launched our new website as an additional method to keep you informed of the Homeowner’s Association activities and projects concerning the lake. Homeowners will have easy access to the most recent data regarding our association’s work toward keeping the integrity of our lake environment. All of the above efforts involve incalculable hours and financial expenditures. Due to our significant membership base and involvement with protective projects at Georgetown Lake, the Homeowners Association remains a significant representative of your interests in the entire surrounding area.
To further sustain representation of your best interests at Georgetown Lake, we request your continued support. If you have neighbors or friends that do not belong to our association, please ask them to join our membership. Everyone who recreates or lives at the lake benefits from the fruits of our labor.
Please take a few minutes to complete the membership form and return it along with your dues of $25. Our first quarter newsletter with annual winter dinner details and 2009 membership form was mailed to the entire membership during January. Membership dues are due by the end of February each year.
